Purpose:
This journal is to help you recognize and utilize Latin and
Greek words that are common in every day language or the profession of your interest.
This year we will have a “Root Word of the Day” to help guide you on this
recognition and utilization journey. There are varying dates for your Word
Journals, so please check on your class calendar/syllabus. Each word is worth 2 points, so the
individual journals are worth different amounts of points.
Requirements:
Your journal will contain one word for each day of class
(approximately 4 per week). For each
word, you will give an analysis of that word:
·
The root word of the day
·
Meaning of the root word
·
The derivative of choice
·
The part of speech
·
The English meaning
·
The linguistic history
·
English word used correctly in sentence
For example:
A, AB – by, away from
Absent - (adj.)
not present, missing
[1350-1400; ME< L absent- s. of absence, prp of abesse to be away from (ab + esse = away from + to be)]
The new student was marked absent
from class due to illness.
Grading:
On the back of this project sheet is a rubric to help you
achieve the desired grade. Please remember
that this is a holistic rubric, which means that your grade is based on how
well you do in all categories, not just one.
